Is eco shopping a thing ? Well yes it is and it is growing in popularity – but what is it exactly.
What is eco shopping – When it comes to products, that means everything from production to packaging needs to be safe for the environment. But here’s where it gets tricky: The FTC Green Guides say that in order for a product to be properly labeled as eco-friendly, the packaging must explain why it is environmentally responsible. Otherwise, it might not even be safe for the environment based on how consumers actually use the product. These misleading marketing claims are often called “greenwashing” (keep reading for more on that topic).
“Environmentally friendly,” “eco-friendly,” and “earth-friendly” are just other words for “not environmentally harmful.”
“Green” is a “casual term that people use in exchange for any word relating to eco-consciousness,” “It’s a multi-faceted term, but it generally implies better practices for both the environment and the people involved.” When surveyed, over 5,000 people from a consumer panel found that 65% think the word “green” is synonymous to environmentally friendly and eco-conscious.
“Sustainable” and “sustainability” can be defined in many ways, but it’s generally “the practice of making sure we don’t deplete the natural resources while maintaining a prospering economy for future generations,”. “It is thought to have three pillars: people, planet, and profit. For a business, this means that ensuring the wealth of employees (and people related to that business) and minimising or even reversing its environmental impacts should be as important as turning a profit for it to be sustainable in the long run.”
Making a truly eco-friendly product keeps both environmental and human safety in mind. At a minimum, the product is non-toxic. Other eco-friendly attributes include the use of sustainably grown or raised ingredients, produced in ways that do not deplete the ecosystem. Organic ingredients or materials are grown without toxic pesticides or herbicides. Products with “made from recycled materials” contain glass, wood, metal or plastic reclaimed from waste products and made into something new. Biodegradable products break down through natural decomposition, which is less taxing on landfills and the ecosystem as a whole.
