Images of the long-awaited all-new SUV have been released – ahead of Paris Motor Show debut

The new Volvo XC90 has been fully revealed today after months of teaser images and drip-fed details. The first chance to see the car in the metal will be at the Paris Motor Show in October but for now the new images above give us the first look at the all-new model, which is longer, taller and lower than the current XC90.

New Volvo XC90 design

Arguably the most prominent characteristic of the new design is the car’s nose, which features a chrome-trimmed grille and T-shaped LED daytime running lights that Volvo says were influenced by the mythical object Thor’s Hammer.

The XC90’s new bodywork takes cues from the Volvo Coupe Concept car and has a sculpted bonnet that cuts back into the car’s shoulder lines. These stretch all the way back to the narrower rear lights to accentuate the SUV’s broad stance.

New Volvo XC90 interior

The interior of the car is striking too, with Volvo claiming that it’s the most luxurious to ever feature in one of their cars. The new tablet-like touchscreen fitted to the central console gives the cabin a sleek, uncluttered look, while leather and wood combined with handcrafted details like the crystal glass gear lever and diamond cut controls should ensure the car feels sophisticated and upmarket when you’re inside.

The new XC90 will be the first car to be launched under Volvo’s new ownership and uses the manufacturer’s Scalable Product Architecture technology, which will also be used for a number of future models still in development. The styling of the car also previews Volvos to come, with the grille and headlight designs likely to feature on models released over the next few years.

New Volvo XC90 engines

The seven-seater SUV will be available with 2.0-litre diesel and petrol engines, with the XC90 T6 model getting a 316bhp supercharged petrol engine and the D5 version using a 225bhp twin-turbo diesel engine. A 395bhp plug-in hybrid model will also be offered and, despite its high power output, is said to be capable of CO2 emissions of just 60g/km, putting it ahead of rivals like the Porsche Cayenne s E-Hybrid in efficiency terms.

The car will only be offered with four-wheel drive from launch, but a two-wheel drive 187bhp D4 diesel variant will be introduced in September 2015.

New Volvo XC90 safety

Volvo has a great reputation when it comes to safety and that looks certain to be enhanced by the new XC90, which will have plenty of innovative technology. Thanks to a ‘run-off road protection package’, the car will be capable of automatically tightening the seatbelts and activating an energy-absorbing system in the seats when it detects it has moved off the road onto rougher terrain.

Another first will be a system that automatically brakes the car if it detects the driver has turned in front of oncoming traffic. Volvo wants to achieve its vision of no deaths or serious injuries while travelling in one of its cars in 2020 and the new systems, combined with other safety technology, are hoped to bring the company a step closer to that goal.

The new XC90 will initially start at £45,785 for the D5 and customers will be able to place their orders some time between the car’s debut at the Paris Motor Show in October and the end of this year.

New Volvo XC90 First Edition

To celebrate the year of Volvo’s launch, 1,927 ‘First Edition’ models will be available to order online from 3 September. Costing £68,785, they will all come in Onyx Black paint and 21-inch alloy wheels, while the interiors will be finished in orange and black with walnut trim to set the cars apart from the rest of the range. All cars will get unique numbered door sills and a distinctive badge on the bootlid. The car will be powered by one of Volvo’s economical D5 twin turbo diesel engines, mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
