THE once-mighty Ark Royal is carved open — to be turned into scrap.
The £320million ex-Royal Navy flagship — which led forces in the 2003 invasion
of Iraq — was sold off for a reported £2.9million.
She served the UK for 25 years and is capable of carrying 22 aircraft — but became a victim of defence cuts. The 22,000-tonne vessel sailed from Portsmouth for the final time in May.
Now at a site 2,000 miles away near Izmir in Turkey, it will take seven months to scrap her to make tin cans and razor blades.
